“As technological advancement continues to change the way we learn and share information, I am excited to contribute to Svetoslav’s vision of making classical music ever more accessible and relatable. It also helps remove barriers in other ways by allowing the teacher and student to connect at any moment when questions come up, regardless of the distance between them. It also allows teachers to easily collaborate with one another to best offer students their specific areas of strengths and expertise.” – Richard Fu

Shanghai-born American pianist Richard Fu is an aspiring recitalist with an affinity for vocal and string repertoire and a developing interest in opera and new music. Though he had wanted to become a lawyer growing up and began as a political science major at Dartmouth, Richard fell in love with classical music while studying abroad in Vienna and changed focus to music midway. He continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in London, University of Oxford, the Juilliard School, and Kunstuniversität Graz.

Richard’s solo distinctions include second prizes at Los Angeles International Liszt Competition and RCM’s Kendall Taylor Beethoven Competition, concerto performances with the Oxford University Philharmonia, Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra, and Dartmouth Chamber Orchestra. Beyond the solo repertoire, Richard most enjoys collaboration with others. He performed Stravinsky’s Septet as part of RCM’s partnership with Philharmonia Orchestra in the Stravinsky: Myths & Rituals Festival, as well as Steve Reich’s Double Sextet alongside Svetoslav Todorov during the composer’s residency at RCM. Recent performances include concerts in Carnegie Hall, Alice Tully Hall, WQXR radio, Sheldonian Theatre, Holywell Music Room, St. John’s Smith Square, recitals with cellist Zlatomir Fung, and a 30-concerts tour across America with violinist Timothy Chooi.

Richard enjoys spending summers at festivals and has received fellowships from Tanglewood Music Center, Music Academy of the West, Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme, and Aspen Music Festival. Richard has worked in masterclass and coaching with artists including Renée Fleming, Maxim Vengerov, Anne Sofie von Otter, Martin Fröst; conductors: Antonio Pappano, Thomas Adès, Alan Gilbert, Yannick Nézet-Séguin; pianists: Menahem Pressler, Dimitri Alexeev, Christopher Elton, and Robert McDonald. Richard’s primary teachers include, in approximate chronological order: Wei Fugen, Hong Teng, Steve Swayne, Sally Pinkas, Victor Rosenbaum, Andrew Ball, Jonathan Feldman, Margo Garrett, Lydia Brown, Brian Zeger, Julius Drake, and many unofficial mentors who have been generous and helpful.
